How to Find your Free Money
You may have $1,000,000. I know, it sounds like Publisher’s Clearing House.
But I am a lawyer, not Ed McMahon, and this is for real. Your small business may have a bonus. You may be entitled to money personally. I found $2,600 for a client of mine and $525 for another client.
New York – and all the States for that matter — has an unclaimed funds department. If the money is unclaimed and it is yours, their job is to give it to you. But they don’t look for you. It is a bit of a treasure hunt.
How did New York get your money? Let me explain.
Banks, insurance companies, and corporations are among many organizations required by law to report dormant accounts to the State Comptroller. These organizations must attempt to notify you by mail and publish the information in newspapers. Despite these efforts, many funds remain unclaimed and are turned over to the Office of the State Comptroller.
Top 8 Types of Unclaimed Funds
- Bank Accounts – savings, checking and CDs
- Court Funds
- Dividends
- Estate Proceeds
- Insurance Benefits/Policies
- Stocks, Bonds, Mutual Funds
- Telephone/Utility/Security Deposits
- Royalty and residual checks for musicians and actors
